DIY Newborn Photoshoot + Shopping List

What You Need To Take Amazing Newborn Pics!

I don’t want to take anything away from professional photographers. The good ones have my utmost respect. In fact, our original plan was to hire a local studio that does superb work for our newborn baby photos. Their photo portraits truly are works of art. But this studio was not cheap and in the end, they wouldn’t sell you the photo files. (I’m against studios that hold your pictures hostage for the rest of your life!)

By the time it was time for our newborn photos, the world was still dealing with Covid19 and my small business was really feeling the hit of revenue losses since March of 2020. Even if I could afford to hire a pricey photographer – how safe would it be for a newborn to meet with strangers?

So for all those reasons, my friends helped me set up a DIY newborn photoshoot! You be the judge of how we did! Below the photos, you will find a suggested shopping list for your own DIY photoshoot. You've got this!

Props Used: Giraffe basket, house plant, hippo stuffed animal

Babies are so sleepy in the first two weeks after birth; they are pretty easy to place in poses. But I don't like putting babies in crazy poses. Some of those photos you see on Pinterest are a little too unnatural and for my taste.

I suggest you pick a spot where a lot of sunlight is coming into your house. Natural light is your best friend for a newborn photoshoot. Professionals say sunrise or sunset times are your golden hours and the best times for your photoshoot. Also, turn up the heat or use a space heater to make it pretty warm so your newborn doesn't wake up or cry from being too cold.

I don't own a regular camera so I used my iphone camera. (I have an iphone 7+ which is very outdated because now they're on iphone 12!) But these days, the cameras on our cell phones are very powerful. If you have a nice, regular camera - even better!

So obviously, you need a camera. In addition, I used the following:

PHOTOSHOOT SHOPPING LIST:

  1. First, "shop" around your own house for baskets, bins, large metal bowls, house plants, fur mats or pillowcases, beanbag - anything that you think would be a good prop or container to place your little bundle. For example, the adorable giraffe basket in the first photo was something I already had in the baby room.

  2. Posing Pillows: Newborn Baby Photography Posing Pillows (Amazon)

  3. Stretch Wrap Blanket: JLIKA Newborn Baby Photography Photo Prop Stretch Wrap (Amazon)

  4. Light: Light Reflector Kit (Amazon) Use this to reflect light unto your newborn - creating soft light and decreasing shadows.

  5. White blanket or sheet that you can use as a backdrop. There are so many backdrops you can buy inexpensively. You can get the look you want on Amazon - Newborn photo backdrops. For the price, I also like this for a baby girl photoshoot: Rose Flower Backdrop Beanbag Rug (Amazon)

  6. Doll Bed: Doll Bed Photo Prop (Amazon) Save money by buying this at a garage sale or borrowing one from another family.

  7. Space heater: Oscillating Ceramic Heater (Amazon) I use this same heater when giving my newborn a bath in the kitchen sink to warm the area so buying this wasn't just for one photoshoot. (Always keep this a safe distance away from your infant because it can get pretty hot.)

It was so much fun to take these photos and now I also have the great memories of doing this with my friends! I also used a phone app called "Rookie Cam" to edit my photos and put different filters on them. That's how I was able to make some of my photos black & white, etc.

These are some of the same photos we printed and included in our 100 Days Baby Party Table Scape that I have been blogging about.

If I can take these adorable pictures - with zero experience in photography - you can do it too!
